The sister of a a young woman who died from asphyxiation after performing a ‘degrading’ sex act for a man online has called for strict new webcamming porn laws.
Graduate Hope Barden, 21, had been working in the online adult film industry as a way of boosting her income as a career for people with learning difficulties.
Hope was found asphyxiated after carrying out a degrading sex act on the internet for a pub landlord over 250 miles away.
Her body was discovered by her flat mate at her home in Burton-upon-Trent in March last year after Jerome Dangar had asked her to engage in dangerous sexual practices.
Staffordshire Police said Jerome Dangar, 45, from Tintagel, Cornwall, was online when Hope died, but made no attempt to raise the alarm.
It is understood a file was being prepared by police for submission to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider charging him with Hope’s manslaughter.
Last month an inquest ruled that her death was ‘unlawful’ but Dangar could not be charged as he died in his prison cell in April 2019 after being convicted of possessing extreme pornographic images.
Hope’s sister Lily, from Penzance, Cornwall, has now spoken out and said her family was devastated by what happened.
“I know he was asking her to blow fag smoke down the camera and paid her £50 for that, which is bizarre,” she explained.
“Then he was asking for very random and extreme things. He was giving her thousands of pounds and she liked designer clothes.
“They weren’t in an online relationship. It was the money and I think it just escalated too quickly.
“She had no mental health issues. It was a terrible accident, which that sick man didn’t report.”
Lily said specific guidelines were needed in the online sex industry where the performer and the punter clearly understood what was and was not acceptable by law.
“The main thing that isn’t acceptable is being able to watch someone (potentially) die on webcam and then not do anything about it,” she told the BBC.
She said Dangar had a “duty of care” by contacting the emergency services when Hope became incapacitated, which could have saved her sister’s life.
“He (Dangar) thrives off stuff like this. He wanted her to do this and it went terribly wrong,” she said. “It was going to be a landmark case.”
“If there’s anything positive that can come out of this ridiculous situation it’s that young girls should be sensible and think about people you are going to hurt from your actions or just don’t do it,” she said.
“But I feel there should be some sort of electronic contract between the performer and the person paying or watching that they both understand – like terms and conditions.
“If the performer is agreeing and contracted with whatever it is, they know what they’re doing, and the guys or girls who are watching know what they are getting themselves into as well.
“That way there’s no wires crossed.”
The family have shared a report on the subject with every UK police force, to assist officers in dealing sensitively “should a dreadful situation like this arise again”.
Two months after Miss Barden was discovered unresponsive at home, Staffordshire Police arrested Dangar in connection with her death.
In January, he was separately convicted of having extreme pornographic images and jailed for 15 months, while the investigation continued.
A file was then submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider a charge of manslaughter.
Detectives found evidence showing Dangar was online while the mental health degree graduate died but made no attempt to raise the alarm.

A new report from Forbes delves into the corporate culture of Badoo, the Russian dating-app company whose billionaire founder Andrey Andreev owns a majority stake in Bumble.
Forbes interviewed 13 former Badoo employees both on and off the record about behavior at the company, which they said included drug-fueled parties, the objectification of women, and sordid software updates.
Many of the stories emanate from 2011 and 2012, about six years after Badoo was founded and around the time that the company’s growth was starting to accelerate.
The Forbes report’s more lurid details include:
One former employee said they saw photos of debauched company parties where “everyone was naked and doing lines of coke” circulating on internal emails.
Sources also told Forbes that engineering updates were named after porn stars, although the report said Andreev put a stop to that in 2018.
A video, the report said, circulated of an employee receiving oral sex from a prostitute. One former employee said she watched the video “at the urging of co-workers,” while four others said they had knowledge of it.
Jessica Powell, the company’s former chief marketing officer, said women were “routinely discussed in terms of their appearance” and that she was told to make prospective job candidates “horny” to work for Badoo.
Badoo’s holding company, MagicLab, said the Forbes report was “reckless” and pointed to the fact that all the stories were from former employees.
Andreev was interviewed for the piece. He said Powell’s assessment was an attempt to market her novel “The Big Disruption,” which was published earlier this year.
“There are many ways to promote a fictional book in order to attract attention, and Jessica is a very talented marketing professional,” Andreev said.
Andreev himself is accused of making inappropriate remarks. A former executive on the marketing team said when Badoo launched in the US in the early 2010s, Andreev complained of its predominantly Latino user base.
“Andrey was always making it clear that white was better,” the former executive said.
Last year, Andreev was accused of rejecting a job candidate on the basis of her weight. “Andrey said, ‘No, she’s fat. Can you imagine her speaking to the press and being the face of Badoo?'” a former employee said.
Andreev denied both allegations to Forbes. “Diversity is at the core of our brands and values,” he said.
Andreev set up Badoo in 2006 and was intimately involved in the launch of Bumble with founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd — who previously left and sued Tinder over sexual-harassment allegations. Both Badoo and Bumble sit within the MagicLab group of companies, which is run by Andreev. His net worth is $1.5 billion, according to Forbes.

Former Legal Aide to D.C. Mayor Pleads Guilty to Child-Porn Charges
Thomas Moir, who worked in the Office of Legal Counsel, shared multiple images of child porn through a streaming platform, prosecutors said.
The former chief of staff in the D.C. mayor’s legal office pleaded guilty Tuesday to distributing images of child porn through an online streaming platform, federal prosecutors announced.
The accusations against 37-year-old Thomas Moir, who worked in the Office of Legal Counsel, are disturbing. Police accused him of sharing multiple images of naked and exposed prepubescent girls—some of whom were engaged in sex acts—on a streaming platform called Rabbit towards the end of 2018.
Moir, a husband and father of a toddler, also allegedly engaged in live message and audio chats with individuals who were also sharing child pornography from his basement “gaming” computer.
“Petite little cuties!” Moir wrote in response to some of the shared images, according to a graphic affidavit. Individuals involved in the chat, including Moir, allegedly discussed “mutual masturbation” while viewing the images.
“Zero limits here man….” he allegedly wrote in one message, along with a smiley emoji. “Mmm little cockteases get what they deserve,” he wrote in another.
Moir had various usernames on the platform, including “BUNNY35950” and “FAPPY_STROKEZ,” authorities said. Many of his accounts were banned after Rabbit’s systems detected potential child pornography.
Images from at least one account were sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for review, and were referred to the FBI. The agency subsequently searched Moir’s home, where they found the basement computer and discovered saved thumbnails of child porn on a laptop, according to authorities.
Moir, who had been working in D.C. government since 2016, was reportedly fired from Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office in January after the city learned about the charges against him. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. found no evidence that he used government property in his crime.
“The allegations are absolutely reprehensible. To the best of our knowledge, none of what is alleged took place at the workplace,” LaToya Foster, director of communications of the mayor’s office, told WJLA in March. “We have been and, if necessary, will continue working with law enforcement on this matter.”
Moir is slated to be sentenced in October, and faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison. He will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.
Request for comment from the D.C. mayor’s office and Moir’s attorneys were not returned at the time of publication.
